Bowie Hunting Knife

What is a Bowie Knife?

A favorite of early American frontiersman Colonel Jim Bowie made the Bowie knife popular to carry. This very large knife can not only easily butcher an entire big game animal in no time flat, it could also save your life if you ever end up in hand to hand combat with a grizzly bear or mountain lion. While the odds of fighting some aggressive big game animals by hand are slim, perhaps you’ll get a little extra piece of mind by having a knife the size of a small sword attached to your hip.

Trimming saplings to processing a bison on the plains are just a couple uses for  knife of this size and weight.

Bowie Knife Owners

Most Bowie knife owners are just plain looking for a big knife. Jim Bowie was able to save his own life several times with a big knife like this at his side. It is unlikely that you’ll ever need to defend yourself in a way that he did, most owners of these knives have a hardcore pioneer spirit that makes these large knives fun to own.

Bowie Hunting Knife Uses

A knife this size might be a little cumbersome in the field, but you’ll find that is is capable of performing a ton of different tasks.  It’s been said that the bowie knife is “long enough to use as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, wide enough to use as a paddle, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet.” Skinning, butchering, self defense and cutting small branches are just the tip of the iceberg of things you can pull off with a massive bowie hunting knife. Sure this knife would not be ideal for skinning the face of a trophy game animal for a shoulder mount, but there are a lot of uses for owning one of these. Personally I would never carry one of these high into the mountains where every ounce of weight can become a burden, but keeping on in your car or in your backpack on short hunts would surely be fairly practical.

If you are looking for a big knife that can do a variety of different tasks, perhaps the Bowie knife is a good way for you to go.
